Access keys

Most browsers support jumping to specific links by typing keys defined on the website. Windows users, you can press ALT + an access key. Macintosh users, you can press Control + an access key.

All pages on this site define the following access keys which are those adopted as U.K. Government Standards:

  • Access key S - Skip navigation
  • Access key M - Skip to Main navigation
  • Access key 3 - Site map
  • Access key 4 - Search site
  • Access key 6 - Contact us / help
  • Access key 8 - Terms and conditions
  • Access key 0 - Accessibility statement

General navigation

  1. Users may skip straight to the content of each page by using the access key S to skip over the navigation. The main navigation menu may be reached by utilising access key M.
  2. All pages on this site use structured semantic markup. H1 tags are used for the page title, H2 tags for main headings within the document and H3 tags for sub headings. Recent versions of screen readers can navigate through the headings using application specific keystrokes.

Links

  1. Links are written to make sense when read out of context and Hyperlinks change colour when the destination page has been visited.
  2. Where necessary, links have a title attribute which describes the target in greater detail.

Images

  1. All content images used in this site include a descriptive ALT attribute. Any images which have empty alt tags are insignificant to the use of the site and/or are purely decorative, such as spacer images or design features.  Screen readers will ignore these images to avoid  relaying irrelevant information.

Visual Design

  1. If your browsing device does not support stylesheets or you prefer to browse using your own stylesheet or with stylesheets turned off, the content of each page is still readable and the site fully navigable.
  2. This site allows for flexible resizing of fonts to meet user requirements. If you find that font sizes are too small simply increase the font size by selecting ‘Change size of text’ option in your browser.

Standards compliance

  1. As far as possible all pages comply with level 2 W3C Web Content Accessibility Guidelines. We have tried to comply with as many of the guidelines as possible but welcome feedback on further measures that can be taken to improve the accessibility of the site.
  2. All cascading style sheets (CSS) validate using the W3C (CSS) Validator.
  3. At the time of writing, this site validated as  XHTML 1.0 Transitional.  This site is content managed and XHTML standards compliance will need to be checked periodically. Please feel free to contact us if there are any violations in the meantime.
